Q. What is CBD for pets?

A. CBD is a natural, safe supplement that supports a healthy endocannabinoid system within your pet to promote deep relief and improved health.

Every mammal has an endocannabinoid system that we're all born with that helps maintain homeostasis. It is intimately involved in everything from energy levels to appetite to immune function to regulating body temperature and temperament. This system uses its network of cannabinoid receptors and natural chemicals to keep balance within the body.

The most important cannabinoid receptors are the CB1 receptor and the CB2 receptor. CB1 receptors help manage how pets' emotions affect their response to different situations. They reduce discomfort and stress, making it possible for pets to relax and feel less pain, which has been shown to improve appetite, memory, and neurological health.

CB2 receptors focus on the immune system and aid in reducing inflammation. They can be found in the bones, skin, spleen, tonsils, and white blood cells. CB2 receptors respond to injuries to the body by reducing swelling and pain. They are crucial for healing as they aid in cell migration. This benefits pets with skin issues, joint pain, allergies and inflammation.

CB1 and CB2 receptors work together to balance the body, mentally and physically. They respond to signals from cannabinoids and can engage with plant-derived cannabinoids like Cannabidiol (CBD). Oral CBD supplementation influences both CB1 and CB2 receptors to provide more healing effects.

So, when you give your pet high quality CBD treats, you are supporting their endocannabinoid system, and promote a healthier, happier life for your dogs and cats. Research shows that CBD supplementation may:

  • Helps maintain normal emotional balance and calmness
  • Promotes immune system vitality
  • Supports a healthy inflammatory response
  • Helps maintain a healthy intestinal tract
  • Antioxidant protection
  • Provides pain relief and a reduction in seizures

Q. What are adaptogenic or 'functional' mushrooms?

Whether they’re called adaptogenic, functional, medicinal or edible, these names refer to safe mushrooms- not psychedelic mushrooms. These mushrooms are healing powerhouses because they provide vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, including antioxidants and digestive enzymes. Some species of adaptogenic mushrooms also assist the immune system and support physical and mental wellbeing of an animal. They contain triterpenes and beta-glucans, which can have numerous health benefits, including fighting cancer, preventing secondary cancers, supporting liver health, aid in wound healing for diabetic patients, improve heart function and blood flow, and alleviate symptoms of allergies. These mushrooms also offer a range of beneficial compounds, including antioxidants, polysaccharides, and melanin which is a potent antioxidant with one of the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) scores of any food. (ORAC is a method developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health to measure the antioxidant capacity of different foods.)

We use five varieties of organic dried mushrooms in our recipes, all safe and beneficial to dogs and cats. They are Reishi, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane, and Chaga. That being said, anyone can respond adversely to anything at any time, so always watch your pet closely when trying new supplements and stop use if your pet has a negative reaction.

Utilizing food as medicine to heal and rebalance our pets bodies and minds is our ultimate goal. These beneficial mushrooms make it so much more achievable to accomplish.

Q. Why are your treats 100% Zero THC?

A. Because we never want to adversely affect your pet’s life.

The psychoactive compound in marijuana, THC, is toxic to pets. THC will make your pet feel "high." They may appear dazed, disoriented, and confused. They can have difficulty walking and maintaining their balance. Other symptoms include:

Glassy eyes and dilated pupils

Hyperactivity

Vocalization

Drooling

Vomiting

Urinary incontinence

THC exposure can also affect their heart rate and body temperature. In severe cases, it can cause tremors, seizures, and coma. The severity will depend on the amount of THC involved along with factors including the size of your pet.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to THC, you should contact your veterinarian or call the ASPCA® Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) at 888-426-4435 right away.

Q. What are the benefits of CBD for aging dogs?

A. Research shows that CBD may support some common symptoms older dogs experience, such as pain, inflammation, and sleep issues.

This quote is by Dr. Megan Buchanan a seasoned veterinarian and expert on this subject, “There are a lot of testimonials about the positive effects people have observed in their pets after using CBD supplements. Owners of older animals with chronic pain, who do not tolerate traditional oral pain medications, appear to be the biggest advocates of these supplements. They see an improvement in their pet’s comfort and mobility using CBD products in combination with, or in place of, their other medications. Many owners have reported that the supplements have improved the appetites of pets with chronic, end-stage diseases such as cancer, heart failure or kidney failure. People also reported improvement in conditions such as cognitive dysfunction, anxiety and inflammatory bowel disease.”

Q. Can your CBD treats help with my pet's anxiety?

A. We believe that CBD is wonderful at relieving anxiety and inducing a calming effect and there is evidence from scientific studies to back us up.

In a Cornell study, dogs were given CBD chews prior to a stressful event, and 83% showed a decrease in stress or anxiety-related behaviors.

A new study, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, reports that a single oral dose of approximately 2 mg/lb of CBD can significantly relieve multiple measures of dogs’ stress caused by car travel or being left alone. The CBD was THC free. There was also another recent study supporting the safety of CBD for longer-term use in healthy dogs, which adds to a growing body of research focused on the safety and efficacy of CBD in companion animals.

In this placebo-controlled, blinded study, scientists at Waltham looked at how CBD impacted the experience of 20 dogs in two common activities expected to cause stress - car journeys and being left alone. They collected several physiological (e.g., blood levels of cortisol, ear temperature, heart rate) and behavioral measures (e.g., whining, trembling, panting) at different times during the study. There were significant changes in several stress-related measures, with the car journey eliciting a more pronounced stress response.

Dogs then received either a placebo or CBD and, two hours after administration, were exposed to either the separation event or car travel. Researchers found multiple measures of the dogs’ stress improved following administration of CBD. Specifically, dogs treated with CBD were scored as significantly less “sad,” had significantly lower cortisol levels, exhibited less whining, and were in a more relaxed emotional state overall than to dogs that received a placebo.

Q. Will my pet get 'high' on your CBD treats?
