Mushrooms are getting a lot of attention these days for both humans and our pets.
Whether they’re called adaptogenic, functional, medicinal or edible, these names refer to safe mushrooms- not psychedelic mushrooms. These mushrooms provide vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients, including antioxidants and digestive enzymes. Some species of edible mushrooms also assist the immune system and support physical and mental wellbeing of an animal.
We use five varieties of mushrooms in our recipes, all safe and beneficial to dogs and cats. That being said, anyone can respond adversely to anything at any time, so always watch your pet closely when trying new supplements and stop use if your pet has a negative reaction.
Organic Reishi mushrooms have been deemed as the "mushroom of immortality" in traditional Chinese medicine. With their powerful medicinal properties, they have been known to improve immune system function, reduce inflammation, provide antioxidants, protect the liver and kidneys, relieve allergies, control blood sugar, and regulate blood pressure. Studies have shown that they contain triterpenes and beta-glucans, which can have numerous health benefits, including fighting cancer and preventing secondary cancers. In addition, Reishi can support liver health, aid in wound healing for diabetic patients, improve heart function and blood flow, and alleviate symptoms of allergies. With its immune modulating, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory actions, Reishi is a versatile and beneficial supplement.
Organic Cordyceps Mushrooms have been shown to promote immunomodulation, which helps the body's natural response to restore balance in the immune system. Its high content of polysaccharides, terpenoids, and other bioactive compounds found in the mycelium and fruit body make it a valuable supplement for pets with allergies and respiratory issues. These mushrooms have been used to address a variety of conditions such as fatigue, sickness, and kidney disease. The presence of cordycepin in these mushrooms has been linked to improving athletic performance and regulating body temperature, while also potentially providing anti-aging benefits and boosting immune function. This is especially important for older pets who may have weakened immune systems and are more susceptible to age-related health issues.
These two mushrooms are combined in our Duck formula for liver and allergy support.
Organic Chaga mushrooms offer a range of beneficial compounds, including antioxidants, beta-glucans, polysaccharides, triterpenes, and melanin. As one of the top sources of antioxidants, they can significantly improve the well-being of pets. They also contain bioactive compounds that can strengthen the immune system by increasing the production of immune cells and enhancing immune response. Research has shown that they have the potential to combat conditions such as diabetes, cancer, and oxidative stress, while also promoting better gut and skin health.
Fun Fact: Chaga is packed with melanin – a potent antioxidant with one of the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) scores of any food. (ORAC is a method developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health to measure the antioxidant capacity of different foods.)
Turkey tail mushrooms have a long history of use in Chinese medicine for their ability to reduce phlegm, clear dampness, increase energy, and boost the immune system. They are rich in beta-glucans which can directly interact with your pet's immune cells and activate macrophages - the cells responsible for fighting off bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Beta-glucans have been shown to activate immune cells, increase antibody production, reduce inflammation, and inhibit the spread of cancer cells. These mushrooms may also provide protection against parasites, viruses, kennel cough, canine flu, and other infectious diseases. In addition, turkey tail is anti-fungal and can help improve digestive, urinary, and respiratory health. As a healthy prebiotic, turkey tail can also support your pet's digestive system and liver health.
Both Chaga and Turkey tail mushrooms are added to our Chicken bites because together they are unmatched at fighting cancer.
